Knowledge systems are infrastructure for organisations that run on information — universities, NGOs, government bodies, and research institutions. The WHO IRIS repository (1M+ records) is the largest project I’ve delivered in this space, but the discipline applies wherever institutional memory needs to be structured, searchable, and governed.
What this looks like in practice
A knowledge systems engagement typically starts with a metadata audit and a discovery phase to understand what the organisation needs to find, not just what it needs to store. I design the schema, select or configure the platform (DSpace, KnowledgeArc, or custom), and manage the migration and launch. Governance documentation and staff training are included — not an optional extra.
